TASTE THE EAST’s FAMOUS “IKAN BAKAR & PORK DUMPLING” IN CHUAN HIN @ KOTA KINABALU, SABAH

One of the local’s delicacy eatery in the state of Sabah, which rich with kinds of local fresh seafoods, the “Roasted Fish” or locally known “Ikan Bakar” been years likes and is the visitor’s favourite when reached this land below the wind.  In the town Kota Kinabalu, we found to recognise one of the best more than 30 years roasted fish specialist “Chuan Hin” since 80s running into second generation by the Chang family.

The local Sabahan Mr. Chang Choi Kwong who born in year 1947 was the initial founder, together with wife Madam Lee Mai Chiang (born 1952) are the immediate owners of the local famous roasted fish & pork dumpling house “Restaurant Chuan Hin”.  Recently being running into next generation assisted by sons Chang Kah Houng (born 1970) and Chang Kah Ho (born 1972).

Chang Choi Kwong who at his age of 69 years old currently, was formerly in Construction Industry been touched the f&b industry in his hometown Sandakan, Sabah then fully stepped into the career in year 1983 running his home recipe roasted fish stall “Ah Kwong Ikan Bakar” at Taman Pelangi, Kota Kinabalu for about 3 years.

With the great response from the local’s public, added with his vision to go further in the field allowed him to established his very 1st restaurant with wife in year 1986 named “Chuan Hin” along Jalan Kolam serving not only his famous roasted fish, but also began to present his wife’s homemade pork dumpling and some other chinese cuisine menus.  From there, their sons Kah Houng and Kah Ho too helping parents in the eating house since kids.

In this Restaurant Chuan Hin, the founder’s first top recommended in menus surely will be their Signature Roasted Fish or “Ikan Bakar”.  Mostly local fresh StingRay selected, marinated with their homemade sambal paste which made from about 8 recipes mixture, then served after charcoal roasted brings authentic spicy & salty eatery you must try when reached Sabah.  Especially taken tipping onto the chilli belacan sided.  Options using Single-Sided Fish or White Pomfret Fish also the customer’s favourite.

Secondly will be their top seller Pork Dumpling which can be served in pan fried or boil-cooked.  Mixtures of pork minced meat and onions, wrapped with handmade flour-made wrapper then pan fried or boiled for minutes brings excellent tasty dumpling you will cannot aside.  Taking tipping with black vinegar sauce and ginger shredded provided will be the best in town.

While in noodles selection, you can taste their famous Pork Ribs Noodle.  Fresh spare ribs braised for half an hour after fried in recipes, then served topped onto their homemade egg noodles brings exotic sweet & salty taste you will never regret after tasted.

Another will be the Beef Noodle, which also among the regular’s most wanted taken as breakfast.  Local beef meat and tendon stewed 3 hours with their secret recipes, also served topped onto their egg noodle brings the best beef noodle you neither found elsewhere other than “Chuan Hin”.

Nonetheless, the owners also introduced their Roasted Beef in banana leaf and Century Egg Dumpling which to be the first in town (according to founder) you cannot missed when stepped into this 30 years history ikan bakar and pork dumpling house “Restaurant Chuan Hin” at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
