“Otak-Otak” been nearly to a century famously taken not only by locals, but a must stopby and taste food by visitors.  The origin of “Otak-Otak” from Indonesia been practiced and recently becomes the Muar’s top recommended eatery in Johor, Malaysia, also known “Otah-Otah” in Singapore.  Is an exotic fish paste mixed with spices then traditionally wrapped in a 8 inches Atap leaf then grilled.

The local originated Madam Ng Cheng Mui who born in Muar, Johor in year 1959 was the founder and the recent owner of the well known “Otak-Otak Cheng Boi” or locally called “Ah Mui Otak-Otak” been entering fifteen years producing her home recipe otak-otak in South Malaysia.

Ng Cheng Mui or Ah Mui who with her age of 55 years old currently, formerly was in clothing industry initially stepped into the food industry since year 2001 at her age of 42 years old.  Experienced from kids touched and approached the otak-otak production traditionally exercised by neighbours and relatives enabled Ah Mui to come out her own home recipe otak-otak which being tasted by friends and families gave her the opportunity to start by doing about 10 packs of her otak-otak in cube packing each day then sell in the local market, began her career.

Subsequent to the great response from the public enabled Ah Mui to operate her very first retail in a lot at Jalan Lama in year 2002 with no name for about twelve years from doing traditional fish otak-otak in atap leaf, untill now selling also in frozen packing with options of fish, prawn, cuttlefish and even fish head.  Also supplying reached Johor Bahru, Melacca, Kuala Lumpur, Segamat etc.

While in year 2014, Ah Mui further exposed into widder shoplot at Jalan Bentayan (recent location) on her branding named “Ah Mui Otak-Otak” and formally registered known “Otak-Otak Cheng Boi” being dropped-by by visitors from other states and Singapore.

In Ah Mui Otak-Otak, her traditional 8 inches atap leaf home made fish otak-otak from fresh ‘Ma Jiao Fish’ sliced in pieces after cleaning and in boneless condition then made into fish paste mixed with her home recipe spices include chillis, garlic, lemon grass, onions, tumeric, shallots, coconut milk, candlenuts or locally known ‘Buah Keras’ brings the best eatery you must try when reached Muar, Johor.  Especially the spicy taste made from her 5 hours fried chillis paste used as part of her recipe.

Other than otak-otak in atap leaf, their frozen otak-otak in packing in flavour of prawn, cuttlefish and fish head also among the recommended and most wanted by their regulars and visitors.  For those who likes prawn cannot missed their Prawn Otak-Otak when reached “Otak-Otak Cheng Boi”, which you can taste the shrimp in between the otak-otak when consumed and bites into mouth.  It brings the texture, as the same when taking their cuttlefish otak-otak.  You will never regret after visited “Ah Mui Otak-Otak” in Muar, Johor.
