If mentioned about handmade fish ball, most of the public will surely first think of the small town “Yong Peng” in Johor which famous with homemade fish ball traditionally since decade. But recently in the center of state, we found and being recognised a Yong Peng originated fish ball specialist “Tian Xiang” in existance at Johor Bharu by the Hoo family since 2012.
The Yong Peng local Johorean Mr. Lawrence Hoo Thian Poh who born in year 1963 was the founder, together with wife Madam Chia Lan Huay (born 1965) are the immediate owners of the recommended fish ball eating house “Tian Xiang Fish Ball” at Century Garden, Johor serving their handmade fish ball and home recipe Laksa to the locals and visitors into the 4th year. Also being assisted by eldest son Donald Hoo Chun Pin (born 1989).
Lawrence Hoo who at his age of only 53 years old currently, was formerly in the Coffee Powder Manufacturing Industry helping family in hometown Yong Peng, Johor been touched the f&b career in year 1987 at his 25th running a kopitiam named “Tian Jing Kopotiam” at Yong Peng reached 1991. From there, Lawrence been experienced the handmade fish ball recipe from one of the stall runner in his coffee house.
Later-on in year 1999, Lawrence Hoo established his very first fish ball restaurant “PK Fish Ball Restaurant” in hometown running with partner and assisted by wife Lan Huay for about 5 years before ended. Then in year 2012, Lawrence Hoo with the vision to re-establish his fish ball career and go further in the industry enabled him and wife began the “Tian Xiang Fish Ball” restaurant in a bigger market at Johor Bharu continue presenting his handmade fish ball and others homemade recipes to the locals.
In Tian Xiang, the founder’s first top recommended in menus surely will be their Handmade Yong Peng Fish Ball which mostly served in boil-cooked. Handmade fish ball from the mixtures of “Xi Tao” fish and yellow tail fish paste prepared brings excellent bites texture and fish ball freshness itself you must try. Lawrence Hoo, the founder made available for about 3000 pieces of fish ball daily.
Secondly will be their Noodle Set or locally known “Kon Lo Mee” which served sided with a bowl of soup with their homemade fishball, yong tau foo and dried beancurd. Egg-made noodles served mixed with their recipes sauce in white & fried onions oil, and topped with fried pork minced brings exotic eatery you cannot aside.
Another will be one of their restaurant’s daily top seller, the Deep Fried Fish Cake which also prepared with the mixtures of fresh homemade fish paste. Served in deep fried then taken tipping onto their homemade chilli sauce you will never regret after tasted. Especially the fish cake bites texture itself and the fresh fish taste into mouth.
Moreover, their Signature Laksa or known “Curry Mee” will be one of their regular’s most wanted. Homemade laksa paste prepared in 2 hours with more than 10 ingredients mixture, boil-cooked into laksa soup base, served in boiled noodles selection and topped with fresh crockles meat, fish ball, dried beancurd and yong tau foo will be a perfect bowl of their Tian Xiang Laksa best to have in town.
Nonetheless, the founder Lawrence Hoo also introduced his Homemade Yong Tau Foo Platter in 5 options of eggplant, bittergourd, red chilli, beancurd and lady finger which all insided with his fresh made fish paste, then served either in boiled or deep fried you cannot missed when stepped into this “Tian Xiang Fish Ball” at Century Garden, Johor Bharu.
